Muay Thai, commonly referred to as Thai kickboxing, is a unique and distinct sport. Different to mainstream boxing, Muay Thai has an aggressive action-packed style that utilizes almost every part of the body to fend off and attack the opponent. Boxers can punch, kick, shove, and push by using their feet, legs, fists, knees and elbows to attack the opponent both above and below the waist. Prior to the start of any match, each boxer performs a pre-fight ceremony to honor and show respect for his or her trainers, religion and the sport. This ceremony, known in Thai as wai kru ram muay, involves a special dance, which is often accompanied by music.
