tour details

The ancient road east from Angkor Wat & Prasat Batchum to Beng Melea is now but a sandy track. It bypasses Cambodia’s lesser known and seldom visited temples that are nestled in the countryside. Banteay Ampil is hidden in dense vegetation several kilometres from the nearest road – which makes it easy to miss! After taking a tuk tuk from your hotel to Andong Pei Village, you’ll hike the 2km required to arrive at this hidden gem. The temple is decorated with carvings and surrounded by a large laterite wall. Silk cotton trees flow over the ruins. From here, you’ll hike a further 5km west through the vegetation to the East Gate of Chau Srei Vibol where you’ll explore the site and have a picnic lunch. This small 11th Century hilltop temple is well off the tourist trail and relatively unknown.

tour description

The ancient road that ran East from Angkor Wat and Prasat Batchum to Beng Melea is now a sandy track that passes lesser known and seldom visited temples hidden in the Cambodian countryside. Banteay Ampil is a couple of kilometers across paddy fields from the nearest dirt road and hidden in a patch of dense vegetation, which makes it easy to miss. The temple consists of a substantial central tower decorated with carvings and lintels surrounded by a large laterite wall. Silk cotton trees flow over the ruins. The 5km route West towards Angkor leaves the dirt road a kilometer before the temple and weaves through the vegetation to the East Gate of Chau Srei Vibol, a small 11th century hill top temple about which little is written.
