Phou Khao Khouay Experience

The National Protected Area of Phou Khao Khouay (‘Buffalo Horn Mountain’) is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Laos. This is a nature lover’s paradise! We'll explore this diverse area with a botanical specialist to fully appreciate the biodiversity of this region. During the trek, you'll see incredible scenery and diverse landscapes as we follow trails through dry evergreen and mixed deciduous forests and pass beautiful waterfalls and rivers that eventually empty into the Mekong. We'll see tropical butterflies and orchids and you'll learn about the rare large mammals such as deer, bears, tigers and elephants that live in the reserve. We'll then head to the Ban Hatkhai village and learn about the lifestyle of the Lao Loum people. From there, we'll take a long-tail boat up the Nam Mang, before continuing along the Houay Xai, one of its tributaries.

Lunch is at a local restaurant. Finally, we'll trek to a magnificent pair of waterfalls, Tad Xay and Pha Xay. At Tad Xay relax by the waterfall and watch the water cascading over seven steps, the Nam Mang flows a further 800 metres to Pha Xay before plummeting 40 metres into the gorge. After the splendour of the waterfalls we return back to Vientiane.
