tour description

Explore the Unesco World of Heritage Site "Georgetown" Visit the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. Built at the end of 19th century. The mansion was originally built with careful attention to the principles of Feng Shui. The distinctive blue color of the mansion is the result of mixing lime with natural blue dye made from the indigo plant and imported from India. Muntri Street is said to have been named after the 19th Century Menteri of Larut, Ngah Ibrahim. It houses a few trade guilds of the bygone era, including the Penang & Province Wellesley Cafe Association formed by Hainanese coffee shop owners, Penang Restaurants and Tea Shops Association, Penang Goldsmith Association, among others. With all this incense wafting around you, you might as well learn where these "joss sticks" come from. Visit joss stick maker Lee Beng Chuan. Unlike the modern sawdust and chemical joss sticks, his emit a very fragrant smell because he uses quality sandalwood imported from Western Australia for his handmade incense. We will walk past the Goddess of Mercy Temple, past flower shops. After visiting the Sri Mahamariamman Temple (oldest Hindu Temple) we walk back to Market Street along food stalls where we will explain to you the different morning breakfasts including Roti Canai and Teh Tarik. Arrive at the Spice Market and experience the hustle and bustle of Georgetown's spice trade by visiting the many wholesale and retail traders dealing in age old spices like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg etc. By now, your appetites should have been stirred up and we end the tour at Banana Leaf Restaurant for lunch.
At the end of the tour, you may wish to take a walk back to the hotel or take the local public transport.
