Explore the thriving local culture of Kota Kinabalu. Search for baskets, place mats, woven tribal fabrics, shell craft, batik fabrics, pearls, Capiz shell lamp shades, embroidered clothes, wood carvings and more at the Handicraft Market. Then, visit the spice bazaar to learn about various spices and their uses along with other different ingredients used in cooking curries and local Malaysian cuisine. Leave the market for a refreshing glass of Teh Tarik” (pulled tea) and Roti Canai (an Indian pancake eaten with curry sauce). Proceed on foot to the town’s oldest part, dating back to pre World War 2, with brief stops at the Padang Merdeka and Atkinson Clock Tower. Finish with a stroll down Gaya Street, the oldest street in Kota Kinabalu which in olden days was the heart of the town.
