The once notorious Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, was once a major centre of opium production, but now repays the visitor interested in the area’s rich cultural past. We’ll take a one-hour boat trip on the magnificent Mekong River to the small town of Chiang Saen on the banks of the river, formerly a Lanna stronghold. We’ll visit the fascinating Chiang Saen Museum which holds many antiques and Buddha images dating from this period. We’ll stroll through Wat Chedi Luang to admire its Lanna-style chedi and then call in at Wat Pa Sak, which contains the ruins of seven monuments. Finally, we’ll climb to the hilltop temple of Wat Phra Thaat Jom Kitti which affords lovely views of Chiang Saen and the river on clear days.
