tour description
Discover the charming historical towns of Lampang and Lamphun, south of Chiang Mai.
Setting off in the morning we drive over an impressive mountain chain in the southern direction to Lampang, capital of its own small province (approx 80 kms). On arrival in Lampang, drive to Ko Kha district to visit Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, built in 1476 and probably the best representation of the northern Lanna-style temple architecture. The main chapel is open-sided, featuring a triple-tiered wooden roof supported by teak pillars; the whole temple is thought to be the oldest existing wooden building in Thailand. Also visit Wat Phra That Don Tao with strong Burmese influence and once housing the famous Emerald Buddha. Afterwards enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, on your way back to Chiang Mai, make a stop at Mae Tha Market at which you will find all kinds of "delicacies" from the forest for sale. Continue to Lamphun to visit the historic temple of Wat Haripoonchai. The temple was built approximately 800 years ago for the then King Arthitayarat, a descendant of Queen Chamthewi. The monastery was originally built in the year 1044 on top of an even older Mon palace. The temple grounds are extensive and contain a lot of impressive buildings. The main attraction, however, is the 46 meter high pagoda. Return to Chiang Mai in the late afternoon.
