tour details

This expedition is specifically designed to allow you to appreciate the architectural splendour of Luang Prabang and then be transported to the jungle for an unforgettable experience with Asian elephants.

Why choose this tour?

This tour is for people who want to experience a once in a lifetime chance to spend quality time with Asian elephants at an Elephant Conservation Centre and eco resort.

You will be met upon arrival at Luang Prabang Airport, transfer to your hotel and check in. The crown jewel of Laos and former Lanexang, Luang Prabang is perhaps the best-preserved traditional city in South East Asia. Magical and charming, it has preserved its long-standing reputation as a stronghold of Lao culture with its splendid natural scenery and sense of timelessness. In 1995 UNESCO voted Luang Prabang as a World Heritage City.

Lunch is at a local restaurant, with a chance to try some Lao dishes, and then you begin your exploration of the city temples starting with a visit to Wat Xieng Thong, considered the most beautiful temple. The sim of the Wat represents the classic Luang Prabang temple architecture with roofs that sweep low to the ground. In the compound stand several small chapels housing bronze Buddha images, which were displayed in Paris in 1911. Near the East gate stands the Royal Funeral Chapel. Inside are an impressive 12-metre high funeral chariot and various funeral urns of each of the Royal Family. The gilt panel on the exterior of the chapel depicts a semi-erotic episode from Ramayana. Also look out for the “tree of life” montage on the rear temple wall. From the temple, we go to gain a different perspective of the city as we climb Wat Phousi Hill for a stunning 360-degree view. After descending we explore Wat Visoun, the site of an impressive stupa, That Makmo, stylistically more Srilankanese than Lao. We can walk to nearby Wat Aham, which is one of the city's major tutelary shrines, dedicated to Deveta Luang (spirit) and Pu Gneu Ya Gneu (ancestors). After your afternoon visiting splendid temples, you can relax and enjoy a Luang Prabang sunset at Wat Prabaht Tai, located along the Mekong River. Return to the hotel.

Meal included:
Lunch at local restaurant
Dinner at hotel
Breakfast is at the hotel.

8:00 hours
Transfer from the hotel to the Post Office for an 8:00 hours minivan departure to the boat pier in Sayaboury. At the Nam Tien Lake pier, transfer to the Centre by boat. Total transfer time is approximately 2.5 hours.

Settle into your private bungalow before your guide takes you to the forest. Wander past the different enclosures where our main activities take place. After enjoying a Laotian style picnic, watch the resident mother and baby at the nursery.

Take the boat back to the centre for the hospital visit. Our Laotian Vet Assistant or our Biologist will introduce you to their world and tell you more about common and uncommon injuries and their respective treatments.

Afterwards, observe the elephants’ daily bath. After the elephants have washed themselves, you will have the opportunity for some soft interaction with the mahouts by your side. Get a feel for the elephant’s amazing skin and prickly hair, and experience up close the dexterity of their trunk. Now the elephants walk back to the forest. After a short trek the mahouts will decide on a place where the elephants can graze for a while. The guide will tell you a little about the background of each elephant.

Early Evening
Before dinner, take in the surroundings from one of our viewpoints, go for a swim in the lake, take out a canoe, or visit the museum where one of the staff will give a small presentation on our conservation efforts. During meal time, ask any unresolved questions and share one of our delicious Lao style cocktails!

On the second day you will meet up with the elephants in the forest. After spending the night grazing in the jungle, it is time for another bath. Enjoy strolling together with these magnificent creatures in their natural environment.

When they have had their fill of water they are brought to the Socialization Area. This is an area where the elephants can freely interact during a big part of the day, recreating a semi-natural living environment. Here the elephants can enjoy being elephants. Follow the guide around the perimeter to learn more about the group and its dynamics. Take your time on the different platforms to see how a new herd is being formed. This rare opportunity will bring you closer to their natural life, something which is very special about our program and difficult to find anywhere else.

Lunch is served at the centre.

You have some time to relax before we bring you back to Luang Prabang by minivan. You can say your goodbyes to the staff at the restaurant or walk around the centre one last time.
