tour details

This tour brings you the best of the art, culture, history and temples that Luang Prabang has to offer. Combined with opportunities for fine dining this is a perfect way to discover this World Heritage City.

Why choose this tour?

For those seeking to experience the best of the art, culture, history and fine-dining on offer in Luang Prabang.

You will be met upon arrival at Luang Prabang International Airport and transfer and check in at your hotel.
This former royal capital, with its gleaming temple roofs, fading colonial architecture and stunning mountain backdrop, retains a unique charm rarely found in all of Asia. Magical and charming, it has preserved its long-standing reputation as a stronghold of Lao culture with its splendid natural scenery and sense of timelessness. In 1995, UNESCO voted Luang Prabang as a World Heritage City.

Start your discovery of Luang Prabang with a visit to Wat Xieng Thong, considered the most beautiful temple. The sim of the Wat represents the classic Luang Prabang temple architecture with roofs that sweep low to the ground. In the compound stand several small chapels housing bronze Buddha images, which were displayed in Paris in 1911. Near the East gate stands the Royal Funeral Chapel. Inside are an impressive 12-metre high funeral chariot and various funeral urns of the Royal Family. The gilt panel on the exterior of the chapel depicts a semi-erotic episode from Ramayana. Also look out for the “tree of life” montage on the rear temple wall.

Lunch is at Khaiphaen Restaurant, a vocational training restaurant serving traditional Laotian cuisine.

After lunch there is the opportunity to explore Wat Visoun, the oldest temple in Luang Prabang and the site of the impressive Singhalese style That Makmo stupa and we then walk to nearby Wat Aham, which is one of the city's major tutelary shrines, dedicated to revered spirits Deveta Luang and ancestors, Pu Gneu Ya Gneu. For a different perspective of the city we climb Wat Phousi Hill for a stunning 360-degree view. After descending we continue on to visit Wat Mai, built in 1796 and famous for the five-tiered roof of its wooden sim built in the standard of Luang Prabang style. At the end of the afternoon there is a chance to relax and enjoy a Luang Prabang sunset at Wat Prabaht Tai, located along the Mekong River.

After breakfast at the hotel, board a traditional riverboat for a trip upstream the Mekong River to visit the famous caves of Pak Ou. The caves house thousands of statues representing Lord Buddha. After the waterfalls visit Ban Xang Hai, a village famous for the distillation of traditional rice alcohol (‘whiskey’) known as ‘lao lao’. Lao-Lao is an important part of Lao culture. The village is also famous for the big jars the rice alcohol is stored in. Villagers have been making alcohol here for over 2000 years. Lunch is at a local restaurant overlooking the Mekong River.

After lunch, walk around Ban Pak Ou Village, a small Laotian fishermen's village on the Mekong River, and continue to Ban Muang Keo village, where you will see the production of coloured fabric, which is woven on simple weaving looms. Return to Luang Prabang by boat and if time permits, continue by car to visit Ban Xang Khong, a weaving village where traditional Sa paper is produced.
