tour description

08:00 hrs. - Depart from your hotel in Kuching city on a 45 minutes' drive by air-conditioned vehicle to Matang Wildlife Centre. This centre is unique among the 8 orang utan rehabilitation centres on Borneo and Sumatra in being a rescue centre for all protected wildlife in Sarawak and aims to rehabilitate and release any animal where possible. Here you will have the unique chance to join the team of the NGO 'Orangutan Project Sdn. Bhd.' and spend time with experts in the field who will share their experiences and knowledge about wildlife conservation with you. After a welcome briefing and an introductory talk about Matang Wildlife Centre and orang utan rehabilitation, you may help hands-on with orang utan enrichment work. Boredom can be a huge stress for captive animals and the importance of enrichment cannot be overstated. Help to create diverse enrichment items for the orang utans, distribute them to the different enclosures and observe how the orang utans demolish your hard work! Tools, stationeries and premium items will be provided while going through all the conservation works.

After obtaining your certificate of participation , continue your journey to Semenggoh Orang Utan Centre, with a stop at a local caf'e9 for lunch en-route. Here you get a chance to observe the semi-wild orang utans who have been rescued from captivity and trained to survive in the surrounding forest reserve. The rehabilitated animals roam freely in the rainforest, and often return to the centre at feeding time. Thanks to the successful breeding program at Semenggoh, there is good possibility of experiencing one of the most heart-warming sights in Borneo - an orang utan mother with young babies.

  • Some of your activities at Matang Wildlife Centre might see you in close proximity to orang utans. However please note that most primate care centres, especially those attempting rehabilitation and release in accordance with the IUCN guidelines, prohibit tourist and volunteer contact with any and all animals for two main reasons: risk of zoonosis (the risk of us passing diseases to our primate cousins) and habituation & behavioural implications (detrimental impact of having a large, ever-changing human presence around apes which might lead to a reluctance to return to their natural habitat).
