tour details

During this tour, take your chance to explore hidden gems that George Orwell would have visited on his excursion in his book, Burmese Days. Based on his experiences as a policeman in Burma (Myanmar), this masterpiece of Orwell presents a devastating picture of British colonial rule. Through the bustling streets of Yangon, you will observe the colonial heritage buildings, bringing life to Rangoon of the 1920s, revealing the rich history and well known sites in the heart of the city.

tour description

Pick up from your hotel and drive to the starting point at Sule Shangri-La Hotel, meet with the lecture and explore Yangon as in "Burmese Days" written by a British writer, George Orwell. The book itself is notable for deriving its plot and themes from the events of Orwell's own life. Walk along the busy Yangon streets to some of the sites that Orwell would have visited on his excursion to the capital. At the same time, witness the colonial heritage buildings of Yangon, bringing to life the Rangoon of the 1920s. As this is a literary tour, the vibrant city of Yangon would be introduced you in a different way as British writers, Somerset Maugham, No'ebl Coward and Rudyard Kipling had described in their novels. Walking along the busy streets of Pansodan, you will also enter the world of Burmese writer Shwe U Daung who (in the 1920s and 30s) adapted the Sherlock Holmes stories for a Burmese audience while searching for his mysterious address in Burmese Baker Street. Stop at a tea shop frequented by contemporary Burmese writers. The walk will be conducted by a great local Burmese guide San Lin Tun. He is a well-known local writer and poet who has lived in Yangon all his life and speaks very good English. He has published a number of books in English including his popular "Reading A George Orwell Novel in A Myanmar Teashop & Other Essays". After that, transfer back to your hotel.
