tour description

08:00 hrs. - Pick-up from your hotel in Kuching and proceed for an approximately 2 hours' drive to Mongkos village of the Bidayuh tribe. This village is located near the Sarawak-Kalimantan border. Along the way to this village we will first stop at the colourful native market in the small town of Serian, where varieties of jungle produces such as edible ferns, bamboo shoots, tropical fruits and many more are on offer.
Mongkos is a thriving rural community and home to one of the few remaining traditional Bidayuh longhouses in Sarawak. The Bidayuh or Land Dayak are the second largest indigenous tribe in Sarawak. Traditionally they lived in longhouses during the tribal war days, but nowadays most Bidayuh settlements consist of individual houses in the surrounding of these longhouses.
Upon arrival the Bidayuh community will welcome us with a traditional dance performance. Visit the 24-doors traditional longhouse, which was made out of woods and bamboos sometime in the 1950s. Take a short tour and learn about the history of the longhouse, including stories from the 'Confrontation', the undeclared war between Malaysia and Indonesia that ran from 1962 - 1966. You will also be taken on a guided walk through the nearby farmlands such as rice fields (seasonal), pepper farm, rubber plantation, tropical fruit orchards and range of local vegetables. After about one hour of walking, which includes crossing a small river, you will reach mini waterfall. Here you will experience how the Bidayuh folks prepare a native style lunch cooked with simple natural "pots", leaves and ingredients (subject to weather condition; in case of rain the lunch will be served in the village).
Enjoy the typical local dishes and take a cooling dip in the mini waterfall.

After lunch, walk back to the village and take a last stroll around the village, meet local villagers and learn more about the Bidayuh way of life before returning to Kuching.
