tour details

Love and Bananas is the name of a Hollywood film released in 2018 about the rescuing of a 70 year old captive Asian Elephant, leading it to freedom. On our full day excursion we visit Elephant Haven Sai Yok in Kanchanburi, where the filming took place. This is an ethical elephant experience with no riding, chains or hooks and guests get to prepare the food and feed the Elephants, and walk with them into the Forest. Kanchanaburi is also known for its part in World War II and we also include a visit to the Allied War Cemetery and a scenic train trip on the infamous ‘Death Railway’.

tour description

This morning you will be met in your hotel by your driver at 07.00am and then depart for the approximate two-hour thirty minute journey to Kanchanaburi. Kanchanaburi is known for its role in World War II, when the Japanese Army began construction of the infamous 'Death Railway'. On arrival (09:30 am approximately) we visit the Allied War Cemetery, resting-place for more than 6,000 Allied prisoners of war. We then continue to the Bridge over the River Kwai that has gained international fame from the film version of the novel. Afterwards, board the train leaving at 10.55am for the 45-minute scenic train ride across a wooden viaduct, offering wonderful scenery along the Kwai River. Depart the train at Tam Krasae station and then make the short transfer to Elephant Haven Sai Yok.
Located in in the beautiful Sai Yok region, this project is extremely important in educating trekking camps and people who keep elephants about Elephant Welfare. This afternoon you will spend time with the Elephants, learning in detail about these magnificent mammals. This is an ethical experience as the Elephants are lovingly cared for by the foundation and mahouts. No Elephant riding is offered here, there are no chains on the elephants and the mahouts do not use bull hooks.
On arrival at Elephant Haven you will be served a local lunch and then observe the elephants having fun playing in the mud. Once their playtime is over, it's time for the most exciting portion of the experience, joining them in the river for the day's bath. After bath time, walk back to the main project area where it will be possible to feed them one final time before saying goodbye. After the elephant experience, transport will be provided back to the hotel in Bangkok, arriving back at approximately 19.00pm.
