The famous Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, was once the dangerous haunt of drug dealers and a centre of opium production. Nowadays, its residents have been encouraged to abandon the drugs trade and to cultivate coffee, flowers and vegetables in the very attractive landscape. On your exploration of the area, you’ll take a leisurely one-hour boat trip from the Golden Triangle to the sleepy town of Chiang Saen, which contains ruins said to date back to the 7th century. You’ll drive through gorgeous countryside to visit the fascinating hilltop village of Baan Kiew Karn, home of friendly White Hmong people. Returning to the Golden Triangle, you’ll enjoy fantastic views of three countries from viewpoints at Wat Phra Thaat Phu Kao, an eighth century temple.
