tour description

Discover Jim Thompson's original silk factory to witness the dying process and explore contrasting areas of the city on this insider's tour. We first visit a hidden temple amongst the shopping malls and skyscrapers of Siam; Wat Pathum Wanaram. Built around 200 years ago, the temple is a blend of old and new with some interesting contemporary art work in the main hall.

Then explore a local community which produces Thai silk for Jim Thompson's Factory, one of the oldest historical homes of silk established by an American businessman. Walk along a colourful canal through a community passing a tailor-made suit factory, open-air goldsmiths and manmade silver houses. There are only two houses left now and you will see the whole process of colouring and weaving by local people.

Then we walk across the bridge to the opposite side of the canal for lunch at a white classic house now a museum & restaurant. Enjoy lunch, and continue to take a tour around the house, a former factory of a famous Thai herb brand. You will see old medical equipment and typewriters amongst other things inside.

We next proceed to Jim Thompson's House where he started a business supplying fine Thai silk to overseas fashion houses, single-handedly saving what had been a dying cottage industry. His silk company continues to flourish today. The main house is full of tastefully displayed Asian art and curios including Buddha images, ceramics and antique furniture. Near the entrance there is a sizeable boutique selling quality silk items, books and prints.

Return to your hotel in the middle of the afternoon.
