Upon arrival at Kuching International Airport, you will be met by a Diethelm Travel representative. Transfer by air-conditioned vehicle to Waterfront Hotel in Kuching (10 km/~30 min). Check-in at hotel & free at leisure.

Overnight at The Waterfron Hotel, Deluxe Room.

Meet & transfer to the Malay village of Bako (25 km/~45 min). A ride on a local fishing boat (~30 min) will bring you to Bako National Park. This National Park is known for its various different types of forest vegetation, which ranges from mangrove forests to mixed dipterocarp forests and heath forests. There are plenty of trails leading through the beautiful park which allow you to explore flora and fauna at its best. Watch out for the proboscis monkeys that can only be found on the island of Borneo! If you are lucky you might also spot various other animals. Among them are wild boars, silver leave monkeys, macaques or monitor lizards.
A packed lunch will be served.
Ends, transfer back to hotel & free at leisure.

Meet, check-out & transfer to Semenggoh Nature Reserve (22 km/~45 min). A visit of Semenggoh Nature Reserve gives you the chance to spot semi-wild orang utans. The orang utans here roam freely in this Nature Reserve and can frequently be spotted during the feeding times. Observe these great animals moving up in the trees or enjoying their fruits. One of the most heart-warming sights is when you witness an orang utan mother with young baby. There are daily scheduled feeding times. However, sightings of these primates during feeding times are not guaranteed due to the fact that they are roaming freely within the nature reserve.
Transfer to Batang Ai (270 km/~4 hrs 30 min). The journey will take you through Borneo's stunning countryside with en-route stops at the local market in the town of Serian, a stop to observe wild orchids and pitcher plants at the roadside and also a visit of a pepper farm. Lunch will be provided in Lachau, a small upcountry Chinese village. After lunch you will proceed to arrive at the scenic Batang Ai lake.
Transfer by ferry across the lake (~30 min) to reach the Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat. Check in at resort & free at leisure to use the many facilities of the resort.

After breakfast, the day starts with a fascinating visit of the former headhunters of Borneo! The journey to the longhouse involves a ride on a traditional Iban longboat. Upon arrival at the longhouse, you will be taken for a tour around the longhouse, to meet the natives and their families. The Ibans will sound their gongs and perform their traditional war dance in full ceremonial regalia. One is often invited to join in.....don't be can be fun...even if you don't understand their language. Don't leave without tasting their rice wine "tuak". A native lunch will be served in the longhouse.
Return to the Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat.
In the afternoon you have the option to venture on a nature walk including a canopy bridge (subject to weather conditions). The rest of the day is free at leisure.

Transfer by ferry across the lake (~30 min) to the Batang Ai jetty and overland transfer onwards to Sibu (250 km/~4 hrs) with several stops en-route.
First stop will be at Betong Junction for a brief stretch. Next stop is Sarikei, also known as "Food Basket" & "Pineapple Town", where a local lunch will be served. As we drive you through this riverine town, feel yourself slip back in time to a different era where life was simpler and more relaxing. During the onwards journey to Sibu, we will stop at fruit stall by the roadside where you can sample some tropical fruits (seasonal).
Transfer to Tanahmas Hotel & check-in.
In the evening you may choose to visit Sibu Night Market, which is opened every night except during heavy rain. Be amazed by the food, gadgets, textiles, utensils & all things interesting sold at this amazing place.

Take a leisurely stroll on the esplanade alongside Malaysia's longest river - the mighty Rajang river. See how local people use boats of all sorts (express boats, speed boats, sampans, etc) to move along the river. Walk on to visit a beautifully crafted Chinese temple, climb up the 7-storey Pagoda with a panoramic view of Sibu's Waterfront, and cut across the winding streets of old Sibu town towards the Sibu Heritage Centre. Here you get an insight into Sibu's history, as well as the local communities' cultures, lifestyles and traditions. Finally explore the biggest Central Market in Malaysia, which is home to more than 1,200 stalls, serving up a bedazzling variety of commodities.
Transfer by speed boat (~1 hr 30 min) to Sungai Kut. This boat journey will bring you through the meandering river, passing Malay villages, timber & sago processing factories, Iban longhouses and Melanau villages. Stop at the Sungai Kut Melanau Village and take a glimpse into the peaceful, undemanding and amazingly serene village life of the gentle Melanau tribe.
Transfer by speed boat (~15 min) onwards to Dalat (if the water level is low, this part of the journey will be covered overland, using local vans).
In Dalat you will visit the iconic Church by the River & The Jerunei Gardens to find out what's so fascinating about these two icons of Dalat.
Overland transfer by local vans/taxis to Lamin Dana (45 km/~1 hrs).
The authentic Melanau Village called Lamin Dana houses the Melanau Cultural Centre. Spend the night at this cultural heritage and let your host spin you yarns from the olden days.

Overnight at Lamin Dana Guesthouse (simple accommodation).

After breakfast, take a leisure boat cruise along the dark mysterious brackish waters of Tellian River & Misan River. Visit the local sago processing centre (closed on Sundays), a cottage industry that produces sago pearls in the traditional way. Proceed to the Mukah market where you experience locals trading and carrying on with daily activities. You can try some "bizarre food" such as 'Siet' (sago worm) and 'Umai' (fresh raw fish). Proceed to the Mangrove Trails opposite Mukah fish market. Depending on weather conditions and water levels, you'll come across crabs that climb trees, monitor lizards stalking its prey, monkeys and other forms of fauna and flora. A local lunch is included.
Transfer to Bintulu (235 km/~3 hrs 30 min) with rest stops in the towns Selangau and Tatau.

Breakfast at hotel & check-out. Transfer to Niah National Park (150 km/~2 hrs 15 min).
Niah National Park comprises of 3.140 hectares of lowland forest surrounding a limestone massif, dominated by a 394 m hill. Within this limestone massif lies the complex of the Niah Caves. The prehistoric Niah Caves are famed for their role as one of the birthplaces of civilization in Asia. A 40,000 year old skull as well as other human remains were found in Niah, making the Niah one of the most important archaeological sites of the world. Today's tour will take you through the Great Cave and Painted Cave, as well as to the Niah Museum (closed on Mondays and public holidays). You will also witness the age-old remnants of bird's nest harvesting inside the cave, which is now a government controlled activity.

Transfer to Lambir Hills National Park (74 km/~1 hr 45 mins).
Here you will find an amazing tropical rainforest with one of the highest numbers of plant and insect species in the whole of Sarawak. You will also find a series of small waterfalls along the Liam river. The Latak waterfall is the most popular with a height of about 25 metres. It plunges into a large deep pool with a broad sandy poolside and makes a very pleasant spot for swimming and sunbathing.
Enjoy a trek through the surrounding Mixed Dipterocarp forest, which is also an excellent place for birdwatching.
A lunch is included.
Transfer to Miri (36 km/30 hrs) and drop-off at Miri airport for your late afternoon flight departure or Miri city hotel. End of services.

    These services include all boat transfers & cruises, as well as activities in the longhouse and the Melanau Cultural Centre.
  • Sightings of wildlife depend on several natural factors (e.g. weather) and therefore cannot be guaranteed.
  • It is customary to bring some gifts for the Iban longhouse people, which can be divided by the number of families. Our guide can assist you during one of the stops en-route to buy some suitable presents.
