Miri has become a popular dive destination due to an abundance of pristine patch reefs. The Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park, lying at depths ranging from 7 metres to 30 metres, has an average visibility of 10 metres to 30 metres. Water temperature at the start of the season is normally 26-27'baC, but can be as low as 23'baC at depth, as the NE monsoon still brings in cold water from the Northern Pacific. By May the water temperature reaches the more normal 29-30'baC.
The diversity and accessibility of corals and other marine life on the reefs is amongst the best in the region. Here are some of them:

Eve's Garden (10 minutes from jetty)
This shallow reef just 7 metres to 2 metres deep is carpeted with soft corals such as leather corals, elephant's ear sponges and sees whips. Giant anemones and clown fishes are all over the reef. This reef is also characterised by the schooling yellow tail fusiliers and angelfishes.

Anemone Garden (20 minutes from jetty)
In terms of flora and fauna composition, this is one of the most interesting reefs with depth ranging from 10 metres to 16 meters. Both hard and soft corals thrive in splendid diversity. Anemones and their symbiotic clown fishes are found in abundance. Bubble corals, stag horn corals and the colourful dendronepthya soft corals. Other surprises are feather stars, giant clams and nudibranchs, with schooling yellow tails also found in exaggerated numbers.

Batu Belais (45 minutes from jetty)
This site is like an open zoo in the sea: the pelagic sea fans, large gorgonian fans of over 4 metre span, yellow coral trees, as well as red, orange and white whip corals are found in their own concentration, spread over an area of 19,000 square metres. Along the 'walkways' are angelfishes, butterfly fishes, sea perch, lizardfish, and nudibranchs. Jacks and yellow snappers are found in abundance. Batfishes are also common among the long swaying sea whips or hovering blithesomely over outcrops whilst being serviced by entourage of cleaner wrasse and shrimps. Reef top is at about 15 metres and the site is absolutely a photographer's heaven.

Siwa Reef (25 minutes from jetty)
With a length of about 800 metres and a depth range from 8 metres to 18 metres, this is the largest amongst the reefs in Miri. The most interesting section of this reef is along the lower reef slope where leopard sharks and huge marble rays hang out during the day. This site is full of surprises in small packages; orange clownfish in purple anemones to several species of nudibranch.

Tukau Drop-Off (50 minutes from jetty)
An exciting drop-off reef (20-40 metres) with a vertical wall. Schooling jacks, barracudas, napoleon wrasses, yellowtail fusiliers and large groupers are always present, and sharks and trumpet fish are occasionally seen here.

Today you will not embark on an underwater discovery, but an underground discovery for a change. This full-day tour will lead you to the famous Niah Caves.
109 km or respectively about 2 hours' drive from Miri town, comprising of 3,140 hectares of lowland forest and limestone hills, lies the Niah National Park with the prehistoric Niah Caves, famed for their role as one of the birthplaces of civilisation in Asia. The oldest human remains in Asia as well as remains of Borneo's prehistoric animals were found here, making the Niah Caves one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
After registration at the park's headquarters a boat will bring you to the other side of Niah river, where you will visit the Niah Museum to learn about the archaeological importance of the Niah Caves. From here a 3 km plank-walk will lead you to the Traders Cave, which used to be a thriving market some 60-70 years ago, where edible birds' nests which had been collected in the caves were barter-traded for food and other goods. Nowadays the collecting of the highly sought-after swiftlet nests continues, but is a government-controlled activity. Having passed through Traders Cave you will reach the Niah Great Cave with the famous excavation sites, where a 40.000 year old human skull was found. Deeper inside this cave you will evidence of the on-going collecting of edible birds' nests as well as collecting of bats guano for fertilizer. If you wish you can exit the Great Cave through the east entrance, climbing up several stairs and through a pitch-black tunnel to get to the Painted Cave with its hematite cave paintings.
Return to the headquarters the same way. The tour will take about 3-4 hours. After the tour, lunch will be served in a local restaurant nearby Niah National Park, before returning to Miri.

A World War II era Japanese warship wreck just off Lutong. The 100 metres ship sits upright with the top deck just 10 metres below the surface. Most of the hull is covered with cave corals. A large moray eel has made its home here and trevally, jacks and barracudas are frequently seen.

Sri Gadong Wreck (60 minutes from jetty)
A small 30 metres cargo ship sits on an 18 metre sand bottom. The whole wreck is teeming with life; jacks, yellow grunts, batfish and barracudas circle the wreck while giant groupers swim in or out of the cargo holds.
