You will be awed by the striking contrast of the bustling modern city centre on one side of the river, and the serenity of typical Malay villages on stilts on the other side of the river. Depart to Mongkos Bidayuh longhouse for about 2 hours' drive through rural scenery, passing pepper gardens and rice fields, with an en-route stop at the local fruit & vegetable market in the town of Serian.
Mongkos village, which is located near the Sarawak-Kalimantan border, is a thriving rural community and home to one of the few remaining traditional Bidayuh longhouses in Sarawak. The Bidayuh or Land Dayak are the second largest Dayak tribe in Sarawak. Traditionally they lived in longhouses but nowadays most Bidayuh settlements consist of individual houses rather than longhouses.
Upon arrival we will visit the 24-doors traditional longhouse which was made out of woods and bamboos sometime in the 1950s. Take a short tour and learn about the history of the longhouse, including stories from the 'Confrontation', the undeclared war between Malaysia and Indonesia that ran from 1962 - 1966. See the bullet holes in the wooden walls of the longhouse, the result of an Indonesian attack on Mongkos during the 'Confrontation'. Then enjoy a Bidayuh-style lunch. After lunch take a tour of the village, meet local villagers and learn about the Bidayuh way of life.
Return to your hotel & free at leisure.

One of the most heart-warming sights is when you witness an orang-utan mother with young baby. Please be aware however, that the orang utans at Semenggoh Nature Reserve are semi-wild and roam freely in a big nature reserve, therefore sightings of orang utans cannot be guaranteed!

Return to your hotel to freshen-up. In the early afternoon, proceed to the "Sarawak Cultural Village", a living museum of Sarawak's natives, located at the scenic foothill of Mount Santubong, a 45 minutes' drive from Kuching city centre. It is a summary of the different cultures of Sarawak's 27 tribes and provides the opportunity to witness the 7 major ethnic groups which stay in their typical traditional houses and demonstrate parts of their daily work. The tour will end with a colourful cultural show with the natives, dressed in their traditional costumes.
