5-day Kong Lor Adventure and Southern Gems combines the renowned Kong Lor caves with visits to the lesser heralded historic towns of Thakek and Savannakhet. The tour starts and ends in Pakse with the option to explore Wat Phu and Champasak.

Arrive in Pakse and transfer to your hotel. The remainder of today is at leisure.

Optional: Visit the former royal capital of Champasak and on to the pre-Angkorian Wat Phu Temple. Wat Phu, a World Heritage Site, that means ‘mountain temple’. The temples in this complex are dated between the 6th and 13th centuries! Located on a hillside, Wat Phu Temple will provide you with spectacular views over the surrounding plains, rice paddies and the Mekong River. Then back to your hotel in Pakse.

Depart Pakse for a day of driving north to Thakhek. En route, a couple of stops will be made at roadside markets or villages.


11:30 – 12:30 hours
Lunch is in the historic town of Savannakhet.


Afternoon
On the way back to route 13, on route 9W, stop at That Ing Hang Stupa (located about 20 minutes outside of Savannakhet). This is Savannakhet’s most sacred site. The Stupa is around 1,500 years old with the area enlarged in the 16th century and in the early 20th century a 9-metre tall, three-tiered stucco stupa was added. This is a site where the Buddha is believed to have delivered a sermon. Continue on and arrive early evening in Thakhek, the provincial capital of the Khammouane Province. During the French colonial period, Thakek was an important city, for trade and defence and many colonial style buildings are still in evidence today.

As the city is located next to the Mekong River there is the chance to end the day with a walk along the riverfront.

Morning
Today we drive to the north of Thakek we will drive approximately 190km to Nahin. Stop for lunch on the way.


Afternoon
Arrival to Nahin in the afternoon. This peaceful place is located in the picturesque valley of Hinboun, framed by high karst peaks. Nahin is an ideal starting point to visit the spectacular caves of Kong Lor, one of the most amazing natural wonders of Laos. Today's highlight is the Cave of Kong Lor. By boat, you explore the cave, which is about 7km long and spectacular, and which is characterised by its beautiful stalactites and impressive columns.

Arrival at Kong Lor View and overnight

Morning
Depart Kong Lor for a day of driving south to Savannakhet. En route, we will stop at some roadside markets and local villages.

14:30 – 15:30 hours
Arrive Savannakhet late afternoon with time at leisure to walk around some of the historic sites of the town. Look out for Wat Xaiyaphoum, Savannakhet’s oldest Buddhist temple. There is plenty of French colonial architecture including around Talat Yen Plaza and The Deer House. Also, look out for Lao Chaleun and Soumpholphakdy House for examples of Art Deco style.

Morning
In the morning depart by driving to Pakse. On the way, approximately 70km south of Savannakhet, we stop to see the Laha cotton weaving in Ban Laha Num village. Learn about the traditional Phoutai cotton weaving that is still practiced today. Every household in the village has a loom. The cotton is dyed using natural dyes such as bark and leaves.

To reach the village from Savannakhet City, take Route 13 south for about 70 kilometres, turn left at Ban Paksong, and after 5 kilometres turn left at the T-shaped intersection. The village is on the right 4 kilometres along the road. After the visit to the weaving village, we continue on stopping for
lunch.

Afternoon
After lunch, continue to Pakse.
Transfer to Pakse airport for your departure flight.
