tour details

This journey combines the pleasure of taking a ‘slow’ look at Vientiane’s temples, lifestyle and food scene, with the joy of being surrounded by the unique natural beauty of Laos’ orchids and visiting Lake Nam Ngum.

Why choose this tour?

Discover Vientiane in true Laos style: slowly. There is plenty of time to experience the best of the culture, lifestyle and natural wonders on offer in and around the most laid back capital in Asia.

Arrival Vientiane
Vientiane's major attractions are the serene Buddhist monasteries that dominate the centre of town. The city has kept its timeless charm with tree-lined avenues, brightly painted temples and quaint French architecture.

You will be met upon arrival at Vientiane (Wattay) International Airport and transfer and check in at the hotel.

Lunch is at Kung’s Café. After lunch we will return to the hotel and in the afternoon you are free to explore the area. Close to your hotel (500m) is the T’Shop Lai Gallery. T’Shop Lai Gallery is popular with art lovers and shoppers. Les Artisans Lao (a cooperative) create fine handicrafts made from local materials, mainly coconut shell, bamboo, egg shell, and salvaged wood. Upstairs there is a gallery to peruse. The tables, chairs and exquisitely designed cabinets are simple and elegant reflecting authentic designs. There are also locally sourced, organic and fair trade cosmetics and skincare products made from coconut.

Late afternoon
As evening falls you will be perfectly situated to walk along by the Mekong River to see the famous bustling Night Market. One of the most well-known night markets in Laos and often referred to as the ‘night bazaar’. It runs along the promenade next to Chao Anouvong Park next to the Mekong River. The red-roofed stalls sell a vast selection of electronics, clothes, accessories, artwork and trinkets. The vendors are not pushy and you can peruse the goods at leisure (open daily from 18:00 - 24:00 hours).

Dinner is at leisure
After breakfast at the hotel, explore Vientiane by bicycle. A short ride from the city centre, Vientiane’s hidden charm is slowly revealed. Cycle along a path by the Mekong River. Ride down dirt roads and through picturesque villages. Take in the local houses and look out for palm and banana trees. En route there are temples and Buddhist monasteries aplenty to admire. The Mekong sandbanks are home to local people fishing the river (seasonal).

Return to the city centre to explore the hidden backstreets and alleys and discover the beautiful colonial residences, home to Laos’ former colonial leaders. After some off-the-beaten-track experiences cycle by some of the iconic landmarks of the city including That Luang Stupa, Wat Sisaket, Wat Phra Kheo, the Presidential Palace, and Patousay. At Patousay climb to the top of the arch and look out over the city. An opportunity to take some great photographs of Vientiane.

The cycling is easy and generally flat. Lunch is at a local restaurant.

At the end of the tour, transfer back to your hotel. Rest of the afternoon at leisure.

Dinner tonight is at Doi ka Noi - This gem of a restaurant is under the guidance of owner and chef Noi. As the first Laos member of the world renowned Slow Food movement, Noi presents food that uses fresh seasonal local produce based on a deep respect for traditional Lao recipes that means dishes are bursting with flavour. The menu changes daily and serves up seven or eight dishes based on what is freshest and available, including organic vegetables in the backyard garden.
