The majestic scenery and the tranquillity of its temples inspired King Tran Nhan Tong, reigned from 1279 to 1293, to leave the royal court to lead the life of a Buddhist monk at Yen Tu. There, he founded the first Vietnamese School of Zen Buddhism called Truc Lam Yen Tu. The sect soon attracted thousands of followers so Tran Nhan Tong ordered the construction of hundreds of structures on Yen Tu Mountain many of which have turned ruins but new and monumental structures have been built and dedicated by the today's followers.
