tour details

The Golden Rock of Kyaikhtiyo is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for Myanmar Buddhists. The gold leaf-covered boulder is said to maintain its balance thanks to a single hair of the Buddha being enshrined inside the pagoda. To reach the top of the mountain, one can either walk and climb 13 Km from the valley floor (which will take around 7 hours or more), board open trucks that drive passengers up a steep and winding mountain road to a point where visitors continue uphill on foot for the remaining 4 Km (500 metres in elevation) or take trucks all the way to the top. Those who do not wish to drive or climb the last section can be carried in sedan chairs by porters for a small additional charge. From the pagoda one can observe the devout in prayer or applying gold leaf to the boulder, and enjoy a spectacular view of the valley below. The whole site has a magical charisma.

In the afternoon, start your introductory half-day tour which takes visitors to the colonial-historical centre of Yangon, a photo stops to the Karaweik Hall royal floating barge; and the gilded Sule Pagoda, dating back over 2,000 years. Proceed to Bogyoke (Scott) Market (closed on Mondays and Public Holidays) followed by an extended visit to Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the world's most spectacular religious monuments. notes

Important Notes for Golden Rock:

  • The road from the base camp up to the Golden Rock has to be done by special dedicated trucks. You are not allowed to drive up there with your own vehicle. These open trucks are equipped with narrow benches on the back.
  • During the raining season, the platform around the Pagoda can be slippery due to rain or mist.
  • It is advisable to carry a torch light as there are frequent power cuts.
  • You are advised to only carry a light duffle bag or hand carry as your big luggage will stay in the car/bus at the base camp.
  • The Golden Rock Pagoda does regular gilding in a three year cycle. During this time, the rock will be covered in bamboo scaffolding. Prior notice is not given and exact schedule for the work are not really available.
  • Accommodation: The Mountain Top Hotel is located on the top of the mountain, whereas the Golden Rock Hotel is located near the upper camp (5 minutes' walk from the truck stop). More hotels are located near the base camp on in/near the village of Kyaiktiyo. Depending on where you stay, the program will need to be adjusted in terms of driving up and down the hill.
  • Sunsets and sunrises on the platform can only be seen if you stay at the Mountain Top Hotel.
  • A footpath goes up from the Golden Rock hotel to the top. The walk uphill takes around 45 minutes whereas downhill will take around 30 minutes. This path during the rainy season can be slippery.
