After breakfast, you will explore the valley of Ba'Kelalan by bicycle. Your bicycle ride will lead you through rice fields and past grazing buffaloes to the villages of Long Lemutut and Long Langai. Visit the headman's house at Long Langai for a tea break and join your host in making local savouries such as "kelupis" or "roti benak", all which are made with glutinous rice. You will also visit the local school SK Ba'Kelalan. Then cycle back to your homestay to freshen up.
In the afternoon a short drive by 4-wheel-drive will bring you to Buduk Bui Salt Spring, where you will learn more about the process of extracting the organic mountain salt which Ba'Kelalan is famous for. The Ba'Kelalan salt springs were discovered generations ago by hunters who noticed animals liked to drink the water there. In order to produce salt the spring water containing brine has to be boiled until all water is evaporated. This process can take up to 4 days and during this period of time a few of the villagers will stay at simple huts at the salt spring to keep the fires burning constantly.
Return back to the homestay for dinner.
For the adventurous, you can also choose to spend one night at the salt spring (if weather permits)! Please inform your guide in the morning whether you wish to spend a night at the salt spring.
Overnight at the village homestay (simple accommodation) or at the salt spring (very simple accommodation).
