tour details

Vang Vieng trekking combines archaeological treasures with a soft trek to experience and learn about the culture, heritage and traditions of the Hmong people. Your tour is rounded off when you take part in a blessing ceremony known as a Baci.

Why choose this tour?

A unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditions and lifestyle of the Hmong people.

After being collected from your hotel in downtown Vientiane, you'll transfer to the famous Vang Xang archaeological site, dating back to the 11th century. The name of the site roughly translates to ‘Elephant Palace’ in reference to a nearby elephant graveyard. Here you'll have a chance to wander through the historic site and see the fascinating Buddha sculpture reliefs inscribed onto the pink sandstone cliffs. The site is usually assigned to an 11th century Mon provenance. Continue to Vang Vieng. En route, visit Ban Houeimo, the fish market village to get an experience of rural life. Upon arrival in Vang Vieng, check in at your hotel.

This scenic, small provincial town is nestled along a bend of the Nam Song River. The natural attractions include the karst topography lining the west bank of the river with sugar loaf hills, dramatic cliffs covered by lush vegetation and peppered by caves and caverns, and rice fields. Lunch today is at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon take a small boat trip for about 30 minutes (2 persons per boat) on the Nam Song River to visit the biological gardens and the natural cave of Tham Chang cave. Here you'll have a chance to cross the bridge over the Nam Song river to explore the cave system, learn about its history, legends and why it is considered to be Vang Vieng’s most important cave. Outside the cave soak up the stunning views over the valley and take a stroll to the viewpoint.
Return to Vang Vieng township to explore the town further.

Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

After breakfast at the hotel you will receive an orientation and information session about the exciting trek ahead. Drive to Ban Phatang to admire beautiful karst landscapes and then continue to Ban Thamxang taking in the scenic topography. Then begin your trek. Starting along rice fields and the bank of the Nam Song River and continuing en route, to visit Ban Phathao, a Hmong hilltribe village followed by the chance to explore Tham Loup and Tham Hoy limestone caves. Hmong women are renowned for their beautiful embroidered costumes and their impressive silver jewellery. As many Hmong still dress in a traditional fashion you will have the opportunity to see this for yourself and learn about this unique culture.

Stop and relax over a picnic lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch continue trekking and return to Ban Thamxang. Once there, explore the culture through observing the daily activities of the local people and then participate and receive a traditional Baci ceremony blessing with the villagers. Baci meaning "calling of the soul" is an important ceremony practiced in Lao and Thai culture. It is a ritual used to celebrate important and special events, like births and marriages, novice monks entering monkhood and beginning of New Year.

The ritual of the Baci involves tying strings around a person's wrist to preserve good luck, and has become a national custom.

Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
Following breakfast at the hotel drive towards Luang Prabang. The journey will take you away from the lowland plains and to a changed landscape of the spectacular scenery of high mountains and plateaus.
