tour details

Hpa An is a fairly new destination in Myanmar and has some of the best sites to visit: the scenery is beautiful with the location on the Salween River. Caves, pagodas, and unspoilt villages make this tour unforgettable. The visit up to the Golden Rock is particularly nice at sunset or sunrise.

Why choose this tour?

  • An opportunity to explore the majestic Golden Rock and exotic Hpa-An area
  • Visit to Hpa-An and its most important religious caves
  • Observing the stunning architectures and admirable historic background of U Nar Auk Monastery
  • Stepping back in time at the memorial Allied War Graves cemetery near Htauk Kyant
Pick up from your hotel in Yangon and drive to Hpa-An. En route visit a tree shrine dedicated to legendary animist spirits known as 'nats'. Drive along endless paddy fields, coconut plantations and small farm villages. Arriving closer to Hpa-An, rock formations appear, similar to the ones in Halong Bay or Phang Nga. Upon arrival in Hpa-An, stroll around the town and transfer to hotel. Lunch at local restaurant.
Visit Kawh Goon Cave. This cave is by far the most interesting. The entrance to the cave is covered with hundreds of small Terracotta votive tablets which are plastered up to the ceiling - some are tiny, some are big. Then, visit Kyauktalat Monastery. This monastery is known for its shape and location on a tiny island (access via a bridge without reeling). Very peaceful atmosphere.
Accommodation at Hpa-An Lodge (Karin Cottage) or similar, Hpa-An
Take the boat along the Thanlwin River to Mawlamyine. This is one the highlight of the trip: the tour takes 2 hours. Beautiful river scenery and hardly any other boats to be seen during the journey. Half way stop in the village of Kadow. This sleeping village offers great opportunities to discover simple village life: stroll through the narrow main lane of the village, talk and laugh with the people! Visit to the U Nar Auk Monastery which houses fantastic reliefs displaying the history of Buddhas life. Return to Hpa An by car and stop at Ein Du Kayin Village where the Kayin dress is woven with most of the village engaged in weaving. Arrival in Mawlamyine, the capital of Mon State, visit Kyaikthanlan Pagoda. This pagoda is the center of the town, and worthwhile visiting as you can enjoy a fabulous view over the entire city and area. Lunch at local restaurant.

HPA-AN - MAWLAMYINE - HPA-AN BY CAR (May to September)
This morning, drive out from Hpa-An to Mawlamyaing (Approximately 1 'bd hours), the capital city of Mon state. With its colonial buildings and its leafy tropical coastal setting, Mawlamyaing has a charm of its own distinct from any other town or city. On the way, stop by the U Nar Auk Monastery which houses fantastic reliefs displaying the history of Buddha's life. Alternatively, you can hire motorbike taxis. Upon arrival, visit Kyaik Than Lan Pagoda which is the centre of the town, and worthwhile visiting as you can enjoy a fabulous view over the entire city and area. Lunch at local restaurant.

In the afternoon, on the way back to Hpa-An, stop in the country side to connect with a local taxi through the paddy fields to reach Saddham Cave (visit entrance only).
Accommodation at Hpa-An Lodge (Karin Cottage) or similar, Hpa-An
Drive to Kin Pun where you start in the trucks and on foot for Kyaiktiyo (the 'Golden Rock'). According to legend, the Golden Rock itself is precariously perched on a strand of the Buddha's hair. The balancing rock seems to defy gravity, as it perpetually appears to be on the verge of rolling down the hill. Lunch at Mountain Top Hotel.
Then, continue to Yangon. On the way, visit the impressive Allied War Graves cemetery near Htauk Kyant, the last resting place of over 6300 Allied soldiers and home to a memorial to 27,000 more. Upon arrival in Yangon, transfer to your hotel.

More hotels are located near the base camp on in/near the village of Kyaikhtiyo. Depending on where you stay, the program will need to be adjusted in terms of driving up and down the hill.
  • Sunsets and sunrises on the platform can only be seen if you stay at the Mountain Top Hotel.
  • A footpath goes up from the Golden Rock hotel to the top. The walk uphill takes around 45 minutes whereas downhill will take around 30 minutes. This path during the rainy season can be slippery.
