tour details

Magic Bagan with its numerous Pagodas and Temples. Explore the full range of Bagan’s attractions, ranging from glorious temples to quiet countryside scenery. Enjoy a relaxing time where you also visit the country side and the mighty Mount Popa from where you have stunning views up to the Irrawaddy River.

Pick up from the airport and start your full day Bagan sightseeing tour with a visit to see the golden stupa of Shwezigon Pagoda, Bagan's most important reliquary shrine - look out for images of the 37 'nats' (spirits) housed in a small hall. See 12th Century frescoes adorning the corridors of Kyansittha 'Cave' Temple, before continuing to Gubyaukgyi (Wetkyi-Inn village), another 'cave' temple with fine frescoes of the 'Jataka Tales' (scenes from the life of the Buddha). Next stop is Htilominlo, the last Bamar-style temple built in Bagan, with old murals and friezes. Pass through Tharaba Gateway into Old Bagan. Continue to Ananda Temple, a whitewashed masterpiece of Mon architecture with four standing Buddhas, with an adjacent brick monastery with beautiful, well-preserved 18th century murals. Make a photo stop at the tallest temple measuring 61 metres - Thatbyinnyu, known as 'temple of omniscience' and dating from 1144 AD. Lunch at Ayeyarwaddy River Terrace Restaurant.
In the afternoon, continue your visit to Dhammayangyi, a massive temple dating from 1170 AD that is famous for its interlocking mortarless brickwork. Next, visit Mingalazedi, the last of the large pagodas built in the 13th Century, representing the pinnacle of Bamar pagoda architecture. Late afternoon, stop at a lacquerware workshop to watch craftsmen skilfully making this most famous of Bagan handicrafts. Enjoy sunset at one of the monuments near the Ayeyarwady River.

There is no better or more spectacular view of the ancient kingdom of Bagan than from a hot air balloon. This world-famous archaeological site of more than a thousand Buddhist temples scattered over a plain is at its best when seen from a bird's eye vantage, as the sun comes up gently over the Ayeyarwady River.
You will be collected from your hotel by Balloons' Teams, and provided with a light breakfast and safety briefing while the balloons inflate, before enjoying a dawn flight lasting just under one hour. Flights operate daily from October through March.

There is a full day to explore the countryside around Bagan (exact itinerary is subject to road conditions). Drive out of Bagan to visit Mount Popa, home to Myanmar's intriguing 'nats'. The steps and path wind steeply up Mount Popa - an energetic climb rewarded by fabulous views from the top. Continue to Kyaukpadaung visit the local market, and stop at a local village. Lunch at local restaurant.
In the afternoon, drive to Salay. Visit Yokesone Monastery (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) built on 154 teak posts and known for its 130-year-old beautiful wooden carvings of the 'Jataka Tales' (stories from the Buddha's life) which decorate the outer walls. Continue to Payathonzu, a complex of three brick shrines with mural paintings from the Bagan period, and see Man Paya - a large lacquer Buddha image, said to date from the 13th century. Return to Bagan through Chauk (53km, about 1hour), where you will see old Burma Oil installations ('nodding donkeys').
