Pick-up from the city hotel in Kuching and travel by air-conditioned vehicle to the small Malay village of Bako, where you then venture on a 20 minutes' boat ride to the national park. After registration and check-in at the park, proceed for trekking. Get to see various animals, such as wild boars, silver leaf monkeys, macaques or monitor lizards. If you are lucky you might also spot the proboscis monkeys that can only be found on the island of Borneo. Please discuss with your guide about the trails that you wish to make, according to your interest.
For lunch you will be provided a packed lunch.
In the afternoon return by boat to Bako village and transfer to a Malay homestay. Upon arrival at the homestay you will be welcomed by your host family and served with coffee and tea.
After a refreshing shower your guide will bring you for a stroll around the village. Depending on the season you might see fishermen offering the catch of the day at the market, or you might be able to witness how 'belacan' (dried fermented shrimp paste) is made.
In the early evening you will board a boat again and cruise upriver in search of crocodiles. Weather-permitting you will get to see a beautiful sunset over the mangroves. In the dark you will continue your search for the estuarine crocodiles. The eyes of these ancient creatures will reflect the lights of the torch lights and shine in bright red colour. Another natural phenomenon are the fireflies that congregate in the mangrove trees and let them shine like Christmas trees!
Return to the homestay for dinner with your host family. Spend the evening with the family, experiencing the warm hospitality and friendliness of the Malay people, before retiring for the night.
