tour details

The story of Cambodia’s past is told through its ancient temples and historic landmarks. We’ll head to the remote ruins of Beng Mealea temple before visiting Koh Ker and its ancient religious buildings. Some of the most impressive pieces in the National Museum come from here. After lunch, we’ll continue to Sro Em and visit the local museum or go for a swim at your hotel. In the morning, we’ll drive to Preah Vihear, one of the most breathtaking temples dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. Here, you’ll see astounding views that stretch as far as the eye can see. After lunch, we’ll head to Anlong Veng, once the ultimate stronghold and the last territory held under Khmer Rouge rule. Here you’ll hear the life stories of the local residents which offer a stark insight into the area’s dark history.

Morning, drive to the remote Beng Mealea temple through the typical Khmer
countryside (60 km, 1hr). Explore the long abandoned ruins of Beng Mealea, still strangled by the overgrown jungle.
A further 1-hour drive brings you to Koh Ker, situated in the northeast of Siem Reap. Discover the long abandoned temples in the forests of northern Cambodia. Also known as Chok Gargyar, it served as the capital of Jayavarman IV (reigned 928-42). His son and successor Harshavarman I moved the capital back to Angkor in 944. There are a remarkable number of religious buildings in the Koh Ker region, considering the short space of time that it was the capital of the empire. There are more than 30 major structures and experts believe there may have been as many as 100 minor sacred buildings in the region. It was also a prolific period for gigantic sculpture and several of the most impressive pieces in the National Museum in Phnom Penh come from Koh Ker, including a huge garuda (half-man, half-bird creature).
Lunch at local restaurant in front of the temple.
Continue to Sro Em (1.5 hrs,100 km) where you can visit the local museum or enjoy the swimming pool at your hotel.
Dinner and accommodation at Preah Vihear Boutique Hotel
Breakfast at hotel.
This morning drive further north to Preah Vihear (25km).
At the foot of the mountain, change to a pickup truck which will bring you to the mountain top to the most breathtaking temple of Prasat Preah Vihear.
The temple, an important pilgrim place during the Angkorian period, was built by a succession of seven Khmer Monarchs. Like other mountain temples, it was designed to represent Mount Meru and was dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. Breath in the astounding views from the cliff stretches as far as the eye can see. Drive about 1 hr 20 min (80km) to Anlong Veng.
Lunch in a local restaurant.
For almost a decade this was the ultimate stronghold: home to Pol Pot and other notorious Khmer Rouge leaders. For those with an interest in contemporary Cambodian history and human beings capacity for evil, the area's Khmer Rouge sites are an important part of the picture. Anlong Veng, a poor dusty town today was the last territory under the Khmer Rouge rule and, to this day, the regime remains a presence in the area. Visit the house of Ta Mok, Pol Pot's second in command, Ta Mok's Stupa and Pol Pot's grave. It is, rather, the life stories of local residents that offer the starkest insight into the area's dark history.
Drive back to Siem Reap (110 km, about 1 hr 40 min).
