tour details

Experience the serene monasteries, lush vegetation and old world charms of the quaint Khong Island.

Transfer from the hotel in Pakse to the boat pier and board a traditional local longtail riverboat. Cruise down the Mekong River heading south toward the former royal capital of Champasak and then continue by car to the pre-Angkorian Vat Phu Temple (6th to 13th centuries). Vat Phu Temple lies on a hillside and offers spectacular views on the surrounding plains and of the Mekong River. It is also special in that it was named a World Heritage Site in 2002 by UNESCO.
Historians say that Phu Pasak was sacred to the pre-Angkorian Kingdom of Chenla (6th century) and may have been the site of human sacrifices. The temple is divided in two parts. The lower part consists of two ruined palace buildings at the edge of a pond, which was used for ritual ablutions. The upper section, the temple sanctuary itself, once enclosed a large Shiva phallus (linga). It was later converted into a Buddhist temple but much of the original Hindu sculpture remains. The lintels feature various forms of Vishnu and Shiva as well as Kala, the Hindu god of time and death. The naga stairway is lined with plumeria (dokchampa), the Lao national flower.
After eating lunch at a local restaurant, drive to Ban Hatsaykhoune and take a ferry across the Mekong River toward Khong Island, which is located in the scenic Siphandone region (Four Thousand Islands). Khong Island, with its lovely fishing villages, serene monasteries and lush vegetation, offers a unique opportunity to experience the peaceful Lao way of life.
Transfer to the hotel and check in before exploring Khong Island. Visit Vat Hangkhong, which is considered to be the oldest temple on the island. Afterward, go to Ban Huay Village and then continue to Muang Sene to enjoy the sunset over the Mekong River.

Return to the hotel and have dinner before concluding the evening.
Eat breakfast at the hotel and then explore the islands and islets that are created when the Mekong River recedes after the rainy season. At its fullest, the Mekong River reaches a width of 14 kilometres, which is the river’s widest point along its 4,350-kilometre journey from the Tibetan Plateau to the South China Sea.
Pass through the delta’s islands of Don Det and Don Som for a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the fishermen. Continue to Don Khone Island and hike along its ancient railway, which was built by the French in 1897 in order to bypass the powerful rapids when transporting goods from Cambodia.
Continue to the Sumphamith Waterfall and then board a local longtail riverboat to access the Ban Nakasang Village. Continue by car and visit the magnificent Khone Phapheng Waterfall, which is the largest cascade along the Mekong River. A fault line caused the cascade, which is 6 kilometres wide at this point, and the astonishing force of the water has cut dramatic gorges through the brittle bedrock.

Have lunch at local restaurant before returning to Pakse by car and arriving at the hotel.
