    07:30 hours
We depart from Bangkok this morning and along with your driver and guide travel the approximate 2.5 hours to Kanchanaburi.

Kanchanaburi is located in a scenic natural setting on the River Kwai. It is best known for its recent history when, during World War II the Japanese forces began construction of the infamous "Death Railway". The museums, war memorials and eponymous Bridge are a poignant reminder of hardship and suffering endured by Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and conscripted Asian labourers, many of whom lost their lives, during the railway's construction.

    10:00 hours
Upon arrival in Kanchanaburi, we visit the Bridge over the River Kwai, one of the most photographed landmarks in the city. The Bridge, which was immortalised in a book and film of the same name, was reconstructed after being bombed in the war and is still in use today.

    10:45 hours
At 'Saphan Kwae Yai' train station we board a local train for a 45-minute scenic train ride through wonderful scenery. While the local train certainly does not offer the same comforts and luxury as the journey to come on the Eastern and Oriental on the Sunday (!), this is a fascinating journey notably when the train runs by the River Kwai and across the wooden Wang Po Viaduct (constructed by Allied POWs).

After departing the train, you will enjoy a tasty local lunch before delving further into the history with a visit to The Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum.

    13:00 hours
Hellfire Pass is notorious as the section of the "Death Railway" that claimed most lives. Walking through the 500-metre long and 26-metre deep section of rock that was cut out by Prisoners of War is an eerily silent and affecting experience. Soldiers were forced to remove the rock using no more than picks, hammers and their bare hands working shifts of 16-18 hours a day. At night the pass was lit by torches leading to the disturbing nickname of Hellfire Pass. The Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum is dedicated to Australians and other Allied Prisoners of War and Asian labourers who suffered and died at Hellfire Pass and elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region during WW2. Proceed on the walking trail through the pass and listen to the informative audio commentary in your headphones.

    15:00 hours
Next, depart towards Kanchanaburi town and check in at Away Kanchanaburi Resort & Spa for. This European Heritage style resort is surrounded by tropical vegetation just outside of the centre of Kanchanaburi town

    16:00 hours
The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure. You may want to relax by the pool, enjoy a massage or explore the nearby Kanchanaburi Town.

Accommodation at Away Kanchanaburi Resort & Spa - Superior Garden room

    11:30 hours
At approximately 11.30 hours check out and then you will be transferred to Kanchanaburi Train station.

    12:00 hours
Prior to lunch, step into a world of glamour as you depart Kanchanaburi's historic train station on the world famous Eastern & Oriental Express to Bangkok (approximately a 4-hour journey).

The train journey is a travelling memoir of a more elegant age. The Eastern & Oriental Express hosts guests in unrivalled style on a timeless adventure.

The Eastern & Oriental Express has been making history since its inaugural journey from Bangkok to Singapore. This enchanting rail experience was the vision of American businessman James B Sherwood, who purchased the carriages of the Silver Star train built by Nippon Sharyo and Hitachi in Japan. The carriages were remodelled in Singapore with an elegant colonial aesthetic, echoing the spirit of classic Indochina. Launched in September 1993, the train has been capturing hearts ever since with magical moments across Southeast Asia.

Once on board, you will be escorted to the luxurious dining carriage decorated in floral motifs with decorative lacquered panels hand-painted with delicate flowers. Take your seat among sparkling crystal and silverware. Then you will be served a sumptuous four-course lunch accompanied by house wine, house spirits local beer and soft drinks.

    Sample menu:

Pan-seared scallop gratinated with calamansi-chilli on green papaya and pomelo salad
    ***************************
Rolled masala chicken on lemongrass risotto served with fragrant Siamese yellow curry bouillon
    ***************************
Pineapple tarte tartin accompanied by vanilla ice cream

    ***************************
    Mignardises with coffee and tea

**premium drinks such as premium wines, signature cocktails and champagne can be purchased on board for a supplement.

Relax in the surroundings, enjoy lunch and raise a toast as you meander past the scenic countryside and quaint villages. Some journeys deserve to be savoured.

After lunch, you will be able to enjoy the second half of the journey from the bar car or observation carriage. You can continue to enjoy the house wines, local beers or house spirits for the rest of the journey.

The Bar Car boasts a jazz-club ambience, music lingering in the air as Pete the pianist plays, while stewards serve drinks. The open-decked Observation Carriage (located at the very end of the train) is the perfect place to relax amidst a colonial 'veranda' ambience with its teak wood flooring, panelled walls, rattan furniture and potted plants.

The train will arrive into Bangkok's Hualamphong train station in the mid to late afternoon where you will say goodbye to your fellow travellers.
