tour details

The rolling hills of the Shan State with its luscious plantations are wonderful places to learn more about the rural life and the beauty of the land population. Scenic villages and colourful markets will enchant you.

Drive up into the hills from Mandalay (80 Km, about 2 hours) for a full day visit of Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo), a former British hill station. Visit the local market, where you might see locally-grown fresh strawberries and other vegetables, originally introduced for cultivation by homesick colonials. Drive through the charming town in a horse-drawn 'stage coach', giving you the chance to admire the colonial-era red brick and half-timbered houses, complete with English-style gables, turrets and chimneys. The tall steeple of All Saints Anglican Church, founded in 1912, is a local landmark. Also visit the large and colourful Chan Tak Buddhist Temple, built by Yunnan immigrants to the town. Lunch at local restaurant.
In the afternoon, visit the tiny Forestry Museum (if open) and the National Botanical Kandawgyi Gardens, which were laid out by Sir Harcourt Butler, a former Governor of Burma - the flower beds are similar to those you would find in an English country garden! Take a short 'jungle' walk on a wooden path leading through rainforest trees.
Accommodation at Aureum Resort@The Governor House (Deluxe Bungalow) or similar, Pyin Oo Lwin.
This morning, drive out of town to visit the Peik Chin Myaung Caves, an extensive cave complex about 22 km from town. A rushing stream flows through the caves to cascade down a beautiful series of steps - one of several beautiful waterfalls in the vicinity. Lunch at local restaurant. On the way back to Mandalay, stop at a At a locally owned winery in Pyin Oo Lwin called Ngwe Nan Taw (Silver Palace Wine), where the winemaker takes a rather experimental route by producing damson wine. Damson is a stone fruit which resembles a plum and the resulting wine has a higher level of acidity than grape wines. Arrive Mandalay and transfer to your hotel.
