tour details

A perfect family 2 day tour in the hilly Mae Rim region north of Chiang Mai, which can be fine-tuned depending on children’s ages. Includes hiking amongst the Hmong villages with stunning views and staying overnight in Hmong Hill-tribe lodge with its pool and evening cultural show. Observing or participate in making paper from Elephant poo fibres, go on an exciting canopy walk, study the weird and wonderful in the Insect Museum and be fascinated by the dress of the various Hill-tribes at Baan Tong Luang. Although not genuine hill-tribe village, this hill-tribe museum is scenically set amongst rice-fields and provides an opportunity to see traditional lifestyle and dress of 8 various hill-tribes that is nowadays rarely seen. The highlight however is undoubtedly going to be the morning spent with the elephants at the Thai Elephant Care centre to learn, observe and bathe these amazing animals.

Depart Chiang Mai hotel for the 90 minute drive north to Hmong Hill-tribe Lodge at 900m en route stopping at Elephant Poo Paper. Elephant Poo Paper is an eco-friendly, naturally built, outdoor museum park focused on introducing and explaining the unique steps involved in making our world famous paper products from elephant poo fibres. Extremely well done and supported by WWF, it has a great cafe, shop and plenty of opportunities for "hands on" during the whole process. Visit the nearby Siam Insect Museum and butterfly garden, a private collection built over 30 years, before continuing to Hmong Hill-tribe Lodge. Lunch at Hmong Lodge.

In the afternoon meet your local guide and choose between the 1, 2 or 3 hour hike either around Lodge or down from Moncham peak if the 3 hour option. The scenery is particularly impressive during the monsoon season with intense vegetable cultivation followed by strawberries in November. Moncham peak is popular with Thais in Winter to see the mist over the valley and feel the chill at 1350m! Good hiking shoes are advised.

Return to Hmong Hill-tribe Lodge for a swim and remainder of day at leisure.
Evening Dinner and cultural show at Hmong Lodge. Accommodation at Hmong Hill-tribe Lodge (Standard room).

Meal included: Lunch & Dinner
Drive 40 minutes to Thai Elephant Care Centre MaeSa for a half day experience from 0930 to 1230. The Thai Elephant Care Centre cares mostly for elderly (occasionally sick or pregnant elephants), which have retired from active working lives and are unable to look after themselves. Currently it has about 10 elephants and the Centre covers a huge area including hilly forest where the elephants can roam free during the day and enjoy the Mae Sa River for bathing. Our programme includes a briefing, visiting and interacting with elderly elephants, making and feeding the elephants with grinded grass and herb balls and bathing them in the Mae Sa River. There are changing rooms and an outfit is provided on arrival.

After lunch at a local restaurant (own cost) drive to Baan Tong Luang Hill-tribe centre, where you have the chance to interact with the hill-tribes in an attractive outdoor setting. Continue to the nearby Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens, a 900 hectare garden with 12 glasshouses where the highlight will be a 500m long canopy walk. Closed July to Sept.
Return 1 hour to Chiang Mai city.
