Drink in luscious landscapes as you travel to Myanmar’s lesser-known mountain areas. Your journey begins in Pindaya with a drive up to the picturesque Shan Plateau. One of the first stops are the storied Pindaya Caves are set in a limestone ridge overlooking a lake. Next, you’ll see a workshop where Shan paper and parasols are made using traditional techniques and Plan Bee Beekeeping Center and tastes of Myanmar honey. After a drive to Kalaw, you’ll enjoy sunset amidst charming bungalows. In the morning, you’ll visit the local market before journeying via ‘slow train’ to Shwe Nyaung, enjoying the incredible scenery along the way. Many villagers ride the train every day, and locals sell fruit and snacks through the train windows at each stop. Your train journey will end in town, where you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch before transferring to Inle Lake.

Transfer from Heho airport to Pindaya (approximately 45 minutes), an attractive drive up into the hills and across the Shan Plateau, through fields of mountain rice. Visit magnificent Pindaya Caves, set in a limestone ridge overlooking a picturesque lake, where thousands of different types of Buddha images are on display in the various cave chambers. Afterwards, continue to local workshop where Shan paper and parasols are made. Visit the Plan Bee Beekeeping Centre (open 9:00 - 17:00 hours, Monday - Saturday) and discover the amazing world of beekeeping and the story for Shan honey. Each year, Shan produces around 1500 tons of Niger honey every year and around 100 tons of mustard honey. Experience the feel and tastes of Myanmar honey and participate in fun workshops and activities for adults and children. Lunch at Green Tea Restaurant.
From Pindaya, drive to the former British hill station of Kalaw (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes) a charming town featuring British-style bungalows set in leafy surroundings.
Accommodation at Kalaw Heritage Hotel (Deluxe Room with Mountain View) or similar, Kalaw.
After breakfast, enjoy strolling through Kalaw, visiting the local market, the tiny railway station and perhaps walking up the hill to see the old Catholic church (if open). Lunch at local restaurant.
Transfer to Kalaw Station for a 13:00 hours departure on the 'slow train' from Kalaw to Shwe Nyaung, a wonderfully scenic trip across the forested slopes of the Shan Hills and pretty patchwork fields. The train is picturesque and simple - your open window carriage is of wooden-slatted benches shared with villagers laden with fruit and vegetables to sell. At country stops, vendors of snacks and drinks ply their goods through the open windows. (Please note that the train can frequently be delayed, so consider this a local adventure! In case of cancellation you may travel by car instead.) Arrival at Shwe Nyaung Station, transfer by car to Nyaung Shwe on the edge of Inle Lake.
