tour details

Moe Yun Gyi Wetlands are in Bago Division, a two-hour drive from Yangon. Now known for its bird life which includes 125 species of migratory and resident water birds, Moe Yun Gyi started out as a 19th century man-made reservoir, which over time and lack of formal maintenance developed into rich, natural wetlands. Designated a wildlife sanctuary since 1988, the 104 square kilometres accommodate a fishery, duck farms and paddy fields, as well as natural habitat for bird viewing. November to February is the best season to visit for birdwatching.

You are picked up at your Yangon hotel and driven to Pyinpongyi (112 km) and Moe Yun Gyi wetlands, where you take a boat for birdwatching on the lake. Annually, millions of birds migrate from the Northern hemisphere to the South along the East Asian-Australian flyway and the Central Asian flyway - directly over Myanmar, which provides vital shelter for both resident and migratory waterfowl. A census at Moe Yun Gyi revealed that there are up to 125 species of water birds in residence at any one time, including 70 species of migrants. These include Purple and Grey Herons, Asian Open-Bill, Ruddy Shelduck, Sarus Crane, Purple Swamphen, Spot-Billed Pelican, Pheasant Tailed Jacana, Black Winged Stilt, Great Cormorant and Little Grebe. Lunch at Moe Yun Gyi Resort.
Enjoy lunch at the Resort. Later in the afternoon, drive back to Bago (formerly Pegu) founded in the year 825 AD by two Mon princes. The town, a former river port and royal Mon capital, is situated about 84 km from Yangon.
Accommodation at Han Thar Garden Hotel (Superior Room) or similar, Bago
Morning visit the highlights include the Shwemawdaw Pagoda, which is over a thousand years old, and whose tip is even taller than that of Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda. Also visit Hinthargone Pagoda, where you can see the 'nat' shrine. Continue to the 55-metre-long reclining Shwe Thalyaung Buddha image, one of the country's most revered objects. Lunch at Royal Taste Restaurant.
Just outside Bago lies Kyaikpun Pagoda, with four 30-metre-high Buddha figures seated back to back. On the way back to the capital, visit the impressive and moving Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery near Htaukkyant, the last resting place of over 6300 Allied soldiers and home to a memorial to 27,000 more. Return to Yangon and your hotel.
