tour details

Joint tour (no min. Number of pax) with fixed departures on every 5th & 19th of the month.

If you want to leave your mark on Borneo, this is the trip for you. Over the course of two weeks, you’ll work at a wildlife centre, aiding in the important preservation and rehabilitation efforts of local activists. You’ll start by meeting all of the animals, many of which are orangutans. During weekdays, you’ll participate in any and all jobs that are required for the centre’s maintenance and development. This includes husbandry, enrichment, construction, farming work, and other activities. On the weekends, you’ll be picked up for adventures. On the first weekend, you’ll enjoy a Borneo Rainforest Kayak tour, which will take you deep into the interior of the rainforest and give you the option to swim, too. On the second weekend, you’ll take off for Bako National Park.

Meet & greet upon arrival at Kuching International Airport and transfer to Basaga Holiday Residences.
The rest of the day is free at your own leisure. You may stroll along the charming Kuching Waterfront and explore the old city centre with its stunning colonial buildings, quaint Chinese shop houses and small Chinese temples.
In the evening you will meet the staff of 'Orangutan Project Sdn Bhd', a conservation company offering alternative solutions and sustainable funding opportunities for the endangered wildlife on Borneo, for a briefing. Get to know the staff and your fellow volunteers during a welcome dinner.

Overnight at Basaga Holiday Residences, ROH (twin-shared).

Meals included:Dinner
Depart Kuching for a 45-60 minutes' drive to Matang Wildlife Centre, which is owned by the Sarawak government, and managed by Sarawak Forestry Corporation. Matang Wildlife Centre is unique among the orang utan rehabilitation centres in being a rescue centre for all protected wildlife, as well as the orang utan, and aims to rehabilitate and release any animal where possible. This is a very ambitious task, and 'Orangutan Project' have committed to helping this centre for the foreseeable future in terms of providing food, building infrastructure, assisting with releases, commissioning research where required, providing expert consultation and assisting with the daily management requirements.
You will settle into your accommodation before being taken on a tour of the centre by resident 'Orangutan Project' staff to meet all the animals and start to get to know the resident orang utan.

Time to get to work! So roll up your sleeves and get to it!
Volunteers will be treated as temporary members of staff. You are expected to participate in any and all jobs that are required for the centre's maintenance and development. Jobs range from construction tasks, to farming work, to enrichment - enrichment is a really fun task that gives you the opportunity to entertain and observe the animals.
A lot of the work you will be doing on the volunteer project at Matang Wildlife Centre might see you in close proximity to the orang utan, and other animals at the centre. This includes husbandry each morning, maintenance of enclosures and enrichment activities. Often you will find yourselves closer than perhaps you would expect to the animals, sometimes within a metre or two. However please note that most primate care centres, especially those attempting rehabilitation and release in accordance with the IUCN guidelines, prohibit tourist and volunteer contact with any and all animals for two main reasons: risk of zoonosis (the risk of us passing diseases to our primate cousins) and habituation & behavioural implications (detrimental impact of having a large, ever-changing human presence around apes which might lead to a reluctance to return to their natural habitat).

One of the weekend getaways includes 2 nights stay in Kuching with one full-day rainforest kayaking tour included. BORNEO RAINFOREST KAYAKING TOUR (B/L/-)
Saturday Depart for Borneo Rainforest Kayak tour. This is a 'must-do' experience for nature lovers and anyone yearning for a little bit of adventure. You will be transported to
the mist-covered highland hillsides of Borneo, through undulating terrain dotted by small scale pepper farms, to Bengoh, a delightful Bidayuh village and staging point for
journeys by foot or river deep into the interior. Here you'll be given paddling instructions and a safety briefing before proceeding down some steps to a small tributary
there your parked kayaks await you. This shaded stream with overhanging trees, steep banks, and a bridge overhead, has just enough room for your kayaks to get
through, and meanders a short distance before opening into the vista of Sarawak Kiri river.
A quarter of the way through your float down the river, you'll alight to explore a delightful Bidayuh village and have a native lunch. After which, continue your relaxing
journey surrounded by lush vegetation on both banks, to a sandy bank beneath soaring limestone hills, but not before getting past an 'exciting' class 1 to 2 (depending on
the water volume and flow) rapid! After a swim you'll continue along (please don't forget your swimming gear), enthralled by the ever changing and stunning scenic views
of limestone hills around each bend in the river. Just before the end of your journey, you'll paddle beneath a huge rock outcrop which turns into an unexpected waterfall on
rainy days. After all that, return back to your hotel in Kuching.
