There are a few hotels in the world whose names have become synonymous with the cities in which they are located. Named after Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore, Raffles Singapore opened in 1887 and became the haunt of travellers from around the world, including Somerset Maugham, who said Raffles stand for “all the fables of the exotic East.” Today, Raffles is very much part of the modern, vibrant city of Singapore.
