The luxurious Amantaka hotel is located in a French colonial building operated by Aman Resorts and opened in September 2009. The hotel is situated in the northwestern part of Luang Prabang in the old town area, just metres away from the Mekong River and approximately 400 metres from the Royal Palace. Amantaka encourages the education of its guests in traditional Lao culture and hires cultural advisers to introduce guests to traditional Lao customs and practices. Located in a French Indochinese colonial building set admidst charming gardens, the hotel is characterised by its low height and extensive width, containing many pilasters to support the roof. The hotel name, Amantaka, is derived from the Sanskrit word aman meaning “peace” and the word taka, meaning “teacher of the Buddha”.
