Sri Lanka the 2nd Best Island Destination

Sri Lanka has received further praise as a tourist destination by the National Geographic Channel, which ranked Sri Lanka as the 2nd best island to visit and emphasized the fact that the island has “absolutely everything in a small space”. Jill Crawshaw, a travel writer for The Times, quotes Marco Polo’s description of Sri Lanka as a “jade pendant in the Indian Ocean”. Crawshaw and Lyn Hughes, Editor of Wanderlust Magazine, highlight the number of products offered by the island; beaches, wildlife, historical places, world heritage sites, forests, waterfalls, and river rafting. Without a doubt, Sri Lanka offers “just a little bit of everything” and one could not “be bored in a million years”.

Previously, The New York Times listed Sri Lanka as one of the best tourist destinations to visit.

Living in Sri Lanka delivers the dream: page after glorious page of airy villas with colonnades and courtyards, rattan furniture, colonial antiques and four-posters festooned with mosquito netting. It's enough to make you wish for instant retirement, defiantly ensconced in a planter's chair waiting for the first G&T of the day…

The Kandy Perahera

The Kandy Perahera

The Kandy Perahera is the most spectacular and colorful of Sri Lanka’s many festivals - an experience of a lifetime.

Sri Lanka's hill capital, Kandy, will once again host the festival honoring Lord Buddha's Sacred Tooth Relic from 15th - 24th August 2010. The festival showcases temple chiefs, Kandyan dancers, fire-juggling acrobats, whip crackers, palanquins, musicians and torchbearers who follow the elephants through the streets in spectacular processions. The highlight of the nightly procession is the brightly festooned Maligawa Tusker, the biggest elephant in the procession, entrusted with carrying the Perahera Karanduwa, a replica of the tooth casket enshrined in the temple in the 4th Century AD.

The tea planters life

In central Sri Lanka, at an elevation of 4000 feet above sea level, lies Ceylon Tea Trails, 4 colonial tea planters' bungalows , infused with a new and decidedly gourmet vibe. Each villa, built between 1890 and 1939, offers a taste of colonial living thanks to butler service & authentic period furnishings, accompanied by gourmet meals and exquisite service.

Sri Lanka Tea Trails

Guests are absorbed into life on a working tea estate, whilst reveling in five-star luxury. The unique Tea Experience tour with the tea planter in residence will show you the wonders of Camellia Sinensis (the botanical name for tea).

The four bungalows offer the upscale traveler both traditional and modern comforts in a "non-hotel" atmosphere. Each bungalow has a Manager, Chef, Butler and support staff to welcome guests as at a planter's home. Meals are based on fresh produce, cooked to order and range from western fare to tea infused dishes and of course traditional Sri Lankan classics.

Scenic walking trails link the properties [which are from 5 to 15 km apart], offering views in all directions. Trekking along the Tea Trails takes you through the heart of the magic Ceylon tea country.

Whales in Sri Lanka

It has taken a surprising long time for it to be discovered and made public, but the sea of Sri Lanka is a whales and spinning dolphins ‘hot spot’. It is definitely the best place in the world to see both Blue Whales and Sperm Whales together.

The best season for whale watching is from December to end April. It is believed that during December and January they would be passing Dondra Head within sight of the shore on their way to the Bay of Bengal and then back again in April to return to up-wellings off Somalia in the Horn of Africa.
