Mulu National Park Cave Site to be Malaysia’s 2nd Globel Geopark
Sarawak is hoping for the Mulu National Park to become the second Global Geopark in Malaysia after Langkawi. Tourism and Heritage Minister said that such a recognition for Mulu, already listed as a World Heritage Site, would be most appropriate considering its numerous natural wonders. Mulu had one of the most spectacular caving systems in the world, including the world’s largest underground
chambers and cave passages. Its geological formations were some 40 million years old. Mulu National Park is a fine example of a world-class geo-tourism destination. Mulu National Park has seen a substantial increase in visitors since its listing by Unesco as a World Heritage Site in 2000. There were 25,000 visitors last year alone. Global Geoparks are also a Unesco programme with 66 in 21 countries around the world.

Here’s an amazing orang utan fact: 97% of the orang utan’s DNA is identical to that of a human! In fact, the name ‘orang utan’, when translated from Malay to English literally means ‘person of the forest’. Not surprisingly, they are extremely intelligent creatures that have the ability to think, feel and express emotion the way we do.

Mt. Kinabalu in Sabah – Mesilau
View the largest Pitcher Plant in the world.
Mesilau derived its moniker from the small stream of yellow waterfall which the locals there claimed to have been originally yellow in color.
Located 2km east of Kinabalu Park; it is home to amazing nature growing pitcher plants such as Nephenthes rajah. Mesilau is practically the highest point accessible to automobiles; it is surrounded by hills and is very close to the foot of Mount Kinabalu. The chilly climate engulfing Mesilau results in sparse population of trees, verdant ferns, as well as other medium-height vegetations.
Enjoy scenic views of the mountain and valleys as you drive along the ridges of the Crocker range towards Mt Kinabalu soaring majestically 4,059 meters from the jungles of Borneo. En route we will stop at a local market to see the various local products being sold by the local tribesmen before we continue to Mesilau. Upon arrival at the park we will have a briefing on the various flora & fauna and will be trekking to one of the few sites on Mt Kinabalu that has the Nephentes Raja, the largest pitcher plant in the world growing in the wild After the trek of one hour we will enjoy a Malaysian set lunch in a delightful restaurant built over the mountain stream in the forest.
