Group cycling tour of Myanmar 3-8 December 2011

Cycling enthusiasts - join us on our first group mountain bike cycling tour through Myanmar. We are thrilled to announce the dates of 3-8 December 2011 for this event. After arriving in Yangon for some initial sightseeing, the real adventure and adrenalin kick begins once we land upcountry in Mandalay.

The first days cycling of 72 km mostly on flat roads explores the ancient capitals, Buddhist monasteries and villages surrounding the city with a great river trip from Mingun back home thrown in.

From Mandalay we head up to the hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo) enjoying the waterfalls, cooler air, botanical gardens and colonial atmosphere for the day; total cycling distance 71 km. Day 3 flying to Heho reveals another world as we enter the beautiful Shan Hills; cycling 92 km today we reach Pindaya in time for lunch continuing in the afternoon past the bucolic Shan villages and their agricultural fields stopping en route to chat with the friendly locals as we head towards Kalaw. Day 4, our last day cycling is perhaps the highlight. With an off road section from the hill station of Kalaw to Aung Ban, we truly can enjoy some amazing panoramic landscape views before hitting an attractive tree lined flat road to Nyaung Shwe on the shores of Inle Lake. After this mornings ride of 57 km, it is time to relax in the afternoon with a magical boat trip on Inle Lake.

The tour is limited to 20 people; hence will be operated on first come first served basis. For more details including the day to day programme and costs, please contact Diethelm Travel Myanmar.

Putao Trekking House

Putao Trekking House - Myanmar

Putao Trekking House - a hikers and soft adventure lovers' paradise in the Himalayan region of Northern Myanmar

Only very recently opened for tourism, Putao in Kachin State, is the jumping-off point for pioneering soft adventure activities in an awesomely beautiful and fascinating region of dense jungle, mighty rivers and snow-capped mountains. Our base and partner in the region, Putao Trekking House, is an extremely cozy and hospitable lodge mainly employing local Rawan and Lisu people who love to share their knowledge. Explore the region on scenic day walks trekking through the evergreen forests, across suspension bridges surrounded only by butterflies and birds or include an overnight stay in a village house to gain a truly authentic insight into the traditional way of life, raft gently down the Malikha River with hornbills flying overhead, or cycle through the spectacular Putao valley with its pretty villages and friendly people. (It's flat!). For the extremely adventurous, a week long private trek to Ziyadam (the frontier village near the Indian border) can be arranged.

Putao Trekking House - Myanmar

Weather-wise the best time to visit is end of November until early April. A tour to this remote area must be regarded as an adventure due to the basic infrastructure and irregular flights.

View our 4 days (Rawan Trail) and 5 days (Lisu Trail) tours worked around the twice weekly Air Bagan flight schedule of Tuesday and Friday.

10 Days Cycling Tour in Myanmar

10 Days Cycling Tour in Myanmar - Diethelm Travel Myanmar

In upcountry Myanmar the most popular forms of transport are bullock carts and bicycles. With bullock carts too slow to see very much of the country in 10 days, we decided to design a new tour for those who love cycling. There is simply no better way to explore upper Myanmar than by bicycle. We have chosen the most scenic parts of the journey to incorporate our cycling elements and with empty roads, a phenomenon rarely encountered nowadays in any other country, it is a real joy to peddle peacefully past the rural villages and fields whilst enjoying some stunning landscape. Cycling allows us to get closer to the friendly Burmese people and we have plenty of opportunities to stop to chat.

We use Mountain bikes in each region and distances vary from easy cycling around the Bagan monuments to longer days of 60 km on flat roads on a couple of days. The tour includes the major highlights of the country; Yangon, Inle Lake, Bagan and Mandalay, yet by cycling allows us to experience the less visited off the beaten tracks areas from Pindaya to Heho and around Mt Popa. The tour is possible during the summer monsoon season as the region around Bagan and Mandalay is known as the 'dry zone' as it receives less rain than the rest of the country.

Step back in Time

Myanmar- Mrauk U

A visit to Sittwe makes you step back in time. The city is a 1-hour flight from Yangonand the starting point of a splendid 5 hours' boat ride to the archeological site of Mrauk U. With its fortress-like temples, Mrauk U is a site that has a cultural importance comparable to Bagan. From this town it is a further 2-hrs cruise to reach Chin villages – famous for the tattooed faces of the ladies.

Discover another Yangon

On the other side of Yangon River is a whole different world! Cross Yangon-River by local ferry and take a trishaw over dusty and bumpy roads, through local villages and plantations.

Discover Another Yangon

This is real local rural life, not to compare with the busy streets of very near Yangon and the Myanmar version of suburbia. Not to be missed!

Bagan Cycling Tours

Cycling is perhaps one of the best ways to explore Bagan, offering a chance to get away from other visitors and see less visited temples and points of interest. The Bagan plain is scattered with acacia and toddy palm trees, bullock carts, zebu cattle, goat herds and villages; the opportunities for taking great photographs is unlimited.

Myanmar - Bagan Cycling Tours

Information:
Cycles are the local "sit up and beg' style without gears but with a basket to put water/camera etc. Children's bikes are available size-wise for the over 10 year olds. No helmets. Cycling on the sand tracks is an art! As Bagan's climate is a dry heat, cycling is not arduous and we can arrange the timing to avoid the heat in the Summer months. Take sunscreen, a hat and water.
