Edward Luce spent five years in India as South Asia bureau chief for the Financial Times. In his words during that time, Indians were, with few exceptions, “unreservedly kind, open, hospitable and tolerant.”

The title suggests the subject matter is full of contradictions – just how exactly is the rise of India “strange”? Those apparent contradictions are explained and if you can read only one book on India, make it this one.

An easy to read book which starts with a history lesson on post-independence India with a focus on the first prime minister – Nehru. This book gives you an insight into politics, economy & society and goes on to cover specifics on where the country has come from, where it is & where it is going.

From the role that the omnipresent caste system plays to effect politics & the country’s economy to expound on the phenomenon that India is & how it is moving ahead with a blend of the old with the new (read modern western influence) in its progress.

With an extraordinary array of characters, from elusive eunuchs to the last remnants of the Raj, Dalrymple's second book is a unique and dazzling feat of research. Over the course of a year he comes to know the bewildering city intimatelyand brilliantly conveys its magical nature, peeling back successive layers of history, and interlacing innumerable stories from Delhi's past and present.

Kite festival, Gujarat

Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti falls on the 14th of January every year.  This is one of Gujarat’s most participatory festivals when countless people throng terraces to fly kites. It is celebrated across Gujarat, with major centers of kite-flying being in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Nadiad, among others.   The kite flown during Uttarayan is internationally called the `Indian fighter’ and it is usually made out of bamboo and tissue paper.  The fighter kite is perfectly proportioned to balance on a single thread even in windy conditions and to be easily manoeuvred by the flier when `fighting’ other kites to cut them out of their air.  The thread used to fly the kite is known as manjha, made from cotton and coated with abrasive material that gives it a cutting edge when `fighting’ with other kites.  The fight or `pench’ refers to the attempt of each flyer to cut the other kites out of the sky.  As the rooftops fill with people, and colourful kites to reach out for the skies, the fights begin with shouting and rejoicing when a kite is cut out of the sky.  Shops and showrooms are decorated with kites and exhibitions of decorated kites are held.  It is sometimes possible to watch kites being expertly hand-made with perfectly balanced measurements at the homes of the artisans.

During the period of Uttarayana, Gujarat Tourism organises an International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad attended by kite flying clubs and individual kite enthusiasts from many countries of the world.

Hornbill Festival, Nagaland

The hornbill festival of Nagaland is an annual feature and is celebrated in the state capital from 1st to 7th December at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama which is about 12Km from Kohima.  The aim of the festival is to revive and protect the rich culture of Nagaland and display its extravaganza and traditions. The Festival is named after the hornbill, the globally respected bird and which is displayed in folklore of most of the tribes.

All the tribes in the state participate in the event and exhibit their traditions, culture, and costumes.  Each of the tribes has its own way of maintaining its distinctive cultural traditions and customs, through various forms of performing arts, which are an integral part of Naga festivals. The tribal communities can be distinguished by the colourful and intricately designed costumes, jewellery and beads that they wear. The traditional ceremonial attire of each tribe is different from that of the other. There are the multi-coloured spears and daos decorated with dyed goat's hair, the headgear made of finely woven bamboo interlaced with orchid stems and adorned with boar's teeth and hornbill's feathers, and ivory armlets. The sound of log war drums and the song of the head hunting ceremony with the ferocious traditional dresses with tattoos make for an exciting atmosphere.
