Hangzhou West Lake Cycle tour - 3 hours

Hangzhou West Lake Cycle tour, China

To fully appreciate Hangzhou's picturesque scenery and to avoid some of the milling crowds in this justifiably popular city, jump on a local bicycle as the inhabitants do. The city is bike friendly with all but small side roads having dedicated cycle lanes and we keep mostly to the lakeside for a flat route. We start along the less visited but nevertheless stunning tree lined Yang Causeway with Xili Lake on one side and smaller lakes on the other; the backdrop of verdant green hills, stone pagodas and landscaped gardens attract many a wedding couple posing for their unique photographs. Nearing the South of West Lake, the circuit loops through forested hills and tea plantations.

Hangzhou West Lake Cycle tour, China

Passing the Viewing Fish at Flower Harbour, we return on the busier Su Causeway across the whole of West Lake and where the misty views are classic Chinese water - colour subjects; pagodas, arched bridges, weeping willow and peach trees. The joy of easy cycling is the close contact with people and photo opportunities, which in Hangzhou means stopping frequently!

New Cycling tours in Old Beijing

There is simply no better way to explore Beijing than by bicycle. Getting a close up and personal impression of this city's historic heart, cycling is fun, healthy and safe with wide bicycle lanes on the main roads, several parks and roads as flat as a pancake. The bicycles we use are local ones conveniently fitted with a basket for storing a rucksack and water. We concentrate on the Hutong area where despite recent development, we still have the opportunity to observe traditional community life amongst the charming narrow lanes that crisscross the city. Our guides have grown up cycling around this city and so can be flexible with the routes depending on your interests.

De Ju Yuan - China

This lovely 26 room traditional old courtyard guesthouse is full of character. Beds are kangs (stone beds with heating inside and a mattress on top) stretching from wall to wall and although the rooms and bathrooms are simple, they are spotlessly clean; it's recommended to stay in the larger rooms. The owners are friendly and serve some of the best food I have ever tasted anywhere in China. A must to be included in any programme in Pingyao for at least a lunch or dinner if not an overnight.

Tian Yuan Kai

Tian Yuan Kai

The Tian Yuan Kai is another good standard traditional old guesthouse with loads of original charm; its 35 rooms are scattered around a series of hidden courtyards with the ubiquitous handing red lanterns and despite the kang style beds having slightly hard mattresses, the rooms are very clean and fun to stay in. The restaurant and bar have an almost stube like atmosphere and are very welcoming. A real experience.

Returning through the traditional but fast fading Hutong way of life, we cycle through the narrow lanes glimpsing into the ancient courtyard homes (Siheyuan)and alongside lakes hanging with willow trees.
